Symphonic suite in seven movements
Created in 1936
The suite is from Prokofiev's ballet of the same name, which premiered in 1938.
The ballet was reworked after Soviet cultural officials disapproved of the happy ending, contrary to Shakespeare’s play
INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, cornet, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, glockenspiel, tambourine, cymbals, triangle, piano, harp, strings (including viola d’amore)
