The work was premiered by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
It features intensely chromatic harmonies paired with Hindemith's wry sense of humor that had been absent from his music after his departure from Germany in the 1930s and during WWII.
INSTRUMENTATION: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets (in A), bass clarinet (in A), 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns (in F), 2 trumpets (in B-flat), 2 trombones, tuba, 2 timpani, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, suspended cymbal, triangle, tambourine, wood blocks, glockenspiel, celesta, strings (one violin and one viola backstage)
